Southport 0 Hereford 1

Report By Matty Hurst

Southport drop points again just 18 days after their away game against Hereford.

The first half started with a flash and a chance for the away side to take an early lead as in the 2nd minute Mclean got in behind the Southport defence and takes it past McMillan but his effort was cleared off the line.

Southport had a couple good chances of their own but the best came in the 31st minute when Walton picked the ball up on the wing, drives inside and weaves through the visitors defence and fired a shot which Visser had to get down quickly to save.

The sides went in at half-time level following a half which had little chances at both ends. Once again Hereford started off strong but this time the visitors were able to gain from it after Holmes made a smart turn on the edge of the box and fired into the bottom corner in the 50th minute.

Moments later Port should’ve equalised after the ball fell to Chris Doyle in the middle of the six yard box but his effort was closed down by Visser straight to the arriving Walton who blazes his shot just over the bar.

Southport piled on the pressure in the final 15 minutes however Hereford were equal to anything Port could create defending well with their backs against the wall for the majority of the latter stages of the second half.

The game ended 1-0 to the away side with Southport now turning their attention to the Lancashire Challenge Trophy and a game against Charnock Richard on Tuesday night.
