AFC Fylde 4 Southport 0

Port Punished By Clinical Fylde

Southport’s short trip to AFC Fylde ended in a heavy defeat as the hosts regained their position at the top of the table, capitalising on South Shields dropping points to move into pole position for the title.

There was a sense from the outset that this would be a stern test for Southport FC, particularly with key absentees in Griffiths and Keane. And while the opening exchanges were relatively even, once Fylde struck, there was only ever likely to be one outcome.

The hosts took the lead on 17 minutes, and from a Southport perspective it was a frustrating one to concede. A corner wasn’t properly dealt with, the ball remained alive in the box, and Fylde punished the hesitation with a well-taken finish by Luca Thomas.

From that point on, Southport never truly found their rhythm. Fylde doubled their advantage on 35 minutes following a costly defensive error. Miscomunication and a mistake between Ted Lavelle and Tom Moore was seized upon, allowing Rodriguez-Gentile to break through. Renshaw produced a good initial save, but the rebound fell kindly for George Wilson, who tapped home to make it two.

Manager Neil Danns would later admit the gulf on the day, acknowledging Fylde were “the better side in every department” and describing it as a learning curve for both himself and the squad after a difficult afternoon.

At the break, Southport looked to respond, introducing McKenzie for Waltman in an attempt to add pace and creativity. However, any hopes of a reaction were quickly extinguished. Just four minutes into the second half, Adam Lewis delivered a superb cross from the left, and Rodriguez-Gentile was left unmarked to tap in a simple third.

Fylde continued to dominate, and only moments later nearly added a fourth in similar fashion, Lewis again the provider as Rodriguez-Gentile’s flick clipped the bar.

It took until the 55th minute for Southport to register an effort of note, Chris Sze dragging a shot wide from the edge of the area. It summed up a frustrating afternoon where clear chances were at a premium.

The fourth goal duly arrived on 71 minutes, and it was a quality strike. Ethan Mitchell skipped past a challenge before driving a low effort into the bottom corner to complete the scoring and cap a convincing display from the hosts.

If there was a positive for Southport, it came late on with the introduction of Aaron Townley. At just 16 years and 5 months, he became the club’s youngest-ever player, a moment that offers a glimpse of promise amid the disappointment. Neil was quick to praise the youngster post-match, highlighting his attitude and potential after impressing in training in recent months.

In truth, this was a day where Southport were second best throughout against a side firmly focused on promotion. As Neil reflected afterwards, the season has been one of growth, and while this result stings, the focus now shifts to finishing the campaign strongly in the final two games.
