Hebburn Town 3-1 Southport

The Sandgrounders fall to defeat on the opening day away from home.

Newly promoted Hebburn took the lead early on after Matty Cornish converted a cut back from close range.

The hosts doubled their lead just before half time as Jake Charles found some space in the penalty area and he converted a left footed half volley into the bottom past the keepers left.

Southport made a double change at half time with Kyle Jameson and Sol Solomon making way for Harry Perritt and club captain Danny Lloyd.

The Sandgrounders managed to pull one back in the 61st minute through new striker Daniel Ogwuru scoring on his debut.

The ball was pulled back to Jordan Slew inside the penalty area and his shot deflected high into the air and Ogwuru was on hand to head it over the keeper.

Despite creating chances through set pieces and some sharp play on the wing by new signing and second half substitute Christy Edwards, Southport were unable to equalise.

Hebburn got a third in the 89th minute with loanee signing from Hartlepool Josh Donaldson wrapping up an opening day victory for the hosts.

Southport have their first home fixture of the season next Saturday at 3pm against Buxton. This is followed by another trip on the road to another newly promoted side in Hednesford on Tuesday the 18th.
