Bedford Town 2 Southport 3

Report By Olly Barton

Southport took all three points at Bedford thanks to a stoppage time goal from fan favourite Jordan Slew and completed the first double of the season

Bedford took the lead in the 17th minute through debutant Zanda Siziba after a scramble in the box and he slotted it past Chris Renshaw.

The Sandgrounders equalised in the 43rd minute after a good run from Sonny Hilton down the left wing and he was brought down in the box and Chris Sze, the striker on loan from Wigan, converted the penalty calmly past the keepers right.

Neil Danns will have been pleased to get a goal just before the break but Southport let the lead slip again as Siziba got his second of the game with a header at the back post in injury time of the first half.

Southport started the second half on the front foot and the most notable chances came from second half substitutes with debutant DJ Pedro denied from close range with a strong foot of goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore. Arthur Gnahoua also came close with a header which cannoned off the post.

But after a period of sustained pressure Southport did manage to equalise in the 76th minute after Jordan Slew’s cross found Gnahoua at the back post and his shot trickled over the line to make it 2-2.

Shortly after Bedford defender Carl Mensah was sent off for a second yellow card offence for a rash challenge on Danny Lloyd. This then proceeded to give the Port some serious momentum going into the last 10 minutes.

Southport found a way to win it in the 93rd minute after a fantastic run from Danny Lloyd down the left wing as he cut it back to Jordan Slew who fired it past the keepers left into the corner of the net to seal a 2-3 away win and send the away end into mayhem.

We will face South Shields away on Tuesday night as we will be looking to make it three wins in a row on the road.

Line up: Renshaw, Pike, Moore, Keane, Dwyer, Griffiths, Lavelle, Hilton, Slew, McKenzie, Sze.
