Southport went 2-0 up very quickly with great strikes from Phil Murphy – Thommo added a third and then Phil got his Hat-Trick making it 4-1 after Fleetwood had pulled one back .
Fleetwood got back into the game but a great goal from Steve Hindley put Southport back in contention just after Phil’s untimely departure due to a recurrence of his injury – with the on the day score at 5-4 to Southport but in favour of Fleetwood with their two goal advantage from the first leg, making the aggregate score 6-5 to our visitors, Thommo scored in time added on make it 6-4 on the day and 6-6 on aggregate!
Penalties were agreed on to settle the game. 3 Penalties each.
Thommo was first up – high and left of the Keeper 1-0 – Fleetwood scored from their first kick 1-1 and then our visitors had their second shot saved brilliantly by Rob Urwin Ice Man Rob Thomas made it 2-1 . Up stepped Fleetwood’s Captain only to see yet another fine save from Rob Urwin, 2-1 Southport and a well earned victory and a mightily relieved Colin Dale who was not looking forward to taking a deciding penalty. So a great win against an accomplished team fielding an England International and a brilliant forward player who was a real handfull but who was well managed by a resolute defence! A win at last, well done everyone and here’s to a speedy recovery Phil Special shout out to Mark Lawford who refereed superbly – Thank you for giving your time up Mark and also to Colin for his tireless work in organising these games
