Despite going down to ten men in the first half, the Sandgrounders held out to win 2-1 at Hereford and win back to back league games for the first time this season.
Southport started off the game in control and took the lead in the 29th minute after Danny Lloyd’s corner looped all the way over goalkeeper Theo Richardson and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
In the 38th minute Southport went down to ten men after Callum Edwards received a second yellow card in the space of two minutes for a push on Lewis Hudson.
That didn’t matter though as on the cusp of half time the Sandgrounders doubled their lead after an inch perfect pass by Teddy Lavelle found Jordan Slew as he cut inside and slotted into into the near post hard and low past goalkeeper Richardson.
Southport set out to defend deep in the second half but Hereford resorted to shots from outside the box due to the fantastic team shape and resilience from the Yellows.
In the 80th minute after a dangerous corner Southport cleared one off the line, Hereford were putting the pressure on to find a way back into the game late on.
They eventually got the ball into the back of Chris Renshaw’s net in the 85th minute as Hamiltons header was deflected past the goalkeeper who could do nothing about it.
The hosts came extremely close to getting an equaliser after a goalmouth scramble in stoppage time but somehow Southport managed to keep the ball out of the net.
This capped off a fantastic week for Southport claiming 6/6 points from two difficult away fixtures.
We host Chester in a huge game on Tuesday night as we look to continue our fantastic run of form.
