As wins go this was up there with the best!
Playing the in form team on their own pitch in torrential rain and coming away with a 2-1 win…they don’t get much better than that.
Every player deserves the credit and it is something to build on.
From the very first minute Southport were in the ascendancy carving out some great chnaces to take an early lead.
The opening goal came in the 20th minute when Adrien Thibaut hit a shot from 20 yards that took a deflection and looped over the ‘keeper into the net.
Chances to extend the lead came and went before the break but going in at 1-0 up was it going to be enough?
Southport goal time (the first ten minutes of the second half) duly paid off again as Sonny Hilton increased the lead in the 50th minute.
We were comfortable but Chris Renshaw also made four superb saves to preserve the two goal cushion until the 90th minute when the home side scored throuigh substitute Luke Brennan.
It made for a nervy final seven minutes of added time but it was a night when we always felt comfortable and the final whistle blew on a great win.
The gate of 561 included a good number of travelling Southport fans who celebrated with the players after the game and we thank them for the support on a such a miserable night weather wise but not on the pitch.
Dylan Dwyer came on as a sub to take NL Player Number 910.
