22-year-old winger Dion Charles has become Southport FC’s second transfer of the day, joining the club for an undisclosed fee from Fleetwood Town.
Dion, who can play on the left or right wing or as a number 10, began his career in the youth academy at Blackpool, before joining AFC Fylde in 2014.
Dion made 52 league appearances for Fylde, scoring 14 goals during the club’s promotion season in the National League North. Following promotion, he scored 4 goals in 12 games for Fylde before securing a transfer to Fleetwood.
Dion made his Fleetwood debut in the Checkatrade Trophy in November 2016 against Carlisle United.
He has spent two spells on loan at FC Halifax Town, both in the National League, and National League North, making 19 league appearances for the Shaymen.
Joined by Kevin Davies upon signing his contract, the Southport manager said: “We’re delighted Dion’s chosen to join the club. He’s an exciting player to watch and will really entertain the fans.
“There’s been a lot of conversations going on and Dion’s a player that we’ve been chasing for a little while. He’ll bring us goals and assists, pace and energy, he’s a very exciting young player.”
“He’s been playing at a higher level this season with Halifax, and was part of their promotion winning team last season, but he’s got to come here now and make this his home.”
