Following the departure of Andy Bishop as Manager of Southport Football Club, whilst the Club receives applications (an interview process will be commenced at the earliest opportunity) the Club are pleased to confirm the appointment of three New Directors to the Board. They are, former Manager Liam Watson and local businessmen David Barron and Nigel Allen.
Chairman Charlie Clapham stated:
“The appointment of Liam Watson is like the prodigal son returning home. Liam managed the club for almost 10 years in two spells at the club achieving two promotions by finishing as Champions of the Conference North in 2005 & 2010, along with recruiting players like Carl Baker, Mark Duffy & Craig Noone who have all gone on to have superb careers in the Football League.
“Liam is joining the Board as Operations Director. His role will be to work closely with the New Manager in player recruitment and playing strategy. This will assist the Manager enormously as Liam’s record of recruiting talented players is second to none. He is regarded in the Non-League world as one of the best managers not to have managed in the Football League in the last 15 years. The manager will have a tremendous amount of support and experience to call on. To be clear Liam has stated he has had his time as a Manager and wants to move into the other side of football management. He will work tirelessly to help the manager and Southport Football Club to compete at the head of the Vanarama National League. We all realise this will take time but Liam with the support of the board knows the challenge and is up for this change to succeed.
“Liam will also work on the commercial and community side with our Commercial and Community Director Haydn Preece. We recognise to be competitive we need to raise additional income. Liam and Haydn will forge an impressive partnership they have been friends for many years. Haydn was responsible for Liam joining the club first time around so I know they will work well together.
“David Barron who is the Owner of Barron Financial Solutions and a long time major sponsor of Southport Football Club has agreed to become a Director. David is a highly respected businessman, fundraiser for many charities, the latest having founded the local charity Community Link Foundation. David is an enormous supporter of Southport Football Club. He will bring his wealth of experience to assist the club in raising the commercial income of the club.
“Nigel Allen has an impressive CV in the commercial world and brings a wealth of commercial experience with him. Nigel was responsible for Plantec, ACH and Pure Legal becoming the club’s shirt sponsor over the last 5 years which endorses his commercial acumen and support for the club, Nigel would refer to himself as a “fan” first and foremost whilst he is a Yorkshire man he has built a close affinity to Southport over the last 10 years. I am looking forward to working closely with Nigel on the commercial side of the business, we have already identified bringing in additional income that will be targeted towards the playing budget, the business side of the board will be complemented by Sam Shrouder who is also a “fan” first and foremost so with a 6 man business board the club is making a strong statement to be playing its football at the right end of the table in the future.
“The new business board will meet shortly to lay down its plans and foundations for the future of Southport Football Club which are and will be exciting. We will engage with Trust in Yellow in order that we take everyone with us on the journey.”
