THANK YOU | Armistice 100

We, along with the rest of the football family, will be remembering and paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.

In our Emirates FA Cup tie we are pleased that the Royal British Legion will be in attendance and involved in the pre-match proceedings along with other members from Byng House.

Also, the game will see a special Armistice 100 commemorative coin used for the coin toss before everyone inside the ground will be asked to honour a minute’s silence before kick-off, whilst the Southport players will wear black armbands with poppies on during the match.

The official match-day programme will also have a cover dedicated to the day of remembrance.

Those former players below who represented the club and town, and as a result of the conflicts lost their lives, we would like to say a special thank you to the following for giving their today for our tomorrow:

WW1

  • Gunner Jack Waring
  • Sapper William Sinclair
  • Lieutenant Reginald Turnell
  • Rifleman Ben Rickerby
  • Gunner Ed Lightfoot

WW2

  • Les Cant (Durham Light Infantry)
  • Harry Salmon (Warwickshire Regiment)

The road where our ground is situated (Haig Avenue) is extremely poignant at this time as it is named after the Commander in Chief of the British Expeditionary force in Western Europe, Field Marshal Earl Douglas Haig.

The road name being changed from Ash Lane after Haig Avenue was made a Freeman of the Borough.
