STATEMENT | Changes to Southport FC Academy

The club can now announce recent changes to the Academy, and update fans on plans for the future.

At the start of the current season, the club took the decision to formally bring the academy squads into Southport FC for the first time, providing funding, facilities and support to the youth structure.

It became apparent fairly quickly that those responsible for our Under 21 team were finding it difficult to recruit players, and indeed the squad was made up of many U17 and U18 players.

Following extensive discussions with the first team Manager and Coaching Staff, it was agreed that the club should continue with U17 and U18 teams, as in reality any players at U21 level should be playing first team football at non-league level.

Player welfare is still our top priority and that is why the club are currently supporting any players who were part of the U21 squad in finding them new sides to represent.

The club are committed to continue to develop the U17 and U18 squads, and will be launching our Academy College Structure at the start of next season, to ensure we are providing education as well as quality coaching.

The move to this new structure will mean our Academy and College will transition to a full-time model and require full-time staffing, as opposed to the current part-time approach.

To facilitate this, in the fullness of time, the club will ultimately be seeking to appoint a full-time Head of Academy & College, as we seek to further develop our youth structure and produce future talent for Southport Football Club.

The recent launch of our Goldline Lottery is designed purely to help fund the new Academy structure, and as a result, 70p of every £1 spent will go directly into this. We encourage all fans to participate and have a part to play in the future of the football club.

We’d like to take this opportunity to also thank the coaches and players who have represented the club this season in the U21 setup and wish them the very best of luck in their future careers.
