Spennymoor v Southport Preview

We take to the road on Saturday with a second journey this season up the M6 and over to Spennymoor Town for this FA Cup 3rd Qualifying tie.

We were only at Brewery Field in mid August and came away on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline with a very controversial late goal settling the tie in the home sides favour.

Southport surprised many coming away from Chorley with a draw after being 2-0 down at half time and then finishing the job off 1-0 in the replay with a super strike from Marcus Carver.

Carver and Josh Hmami were on the scoresheet in August.

Spennymoor progressed after a 1-0 over AFC Fylde in their replay having come away from Fylde with an excellent 1-1 draw.

We know the dangerman and something of a Nemesis at Spennymoor in Glen Taylor who has a bad habit of scoring against us but we saw a strong overall team performance from the home side the last time we met.

Southport matched the home side in the league game and should have come away with a draw and go into the game full of confidence on the back of the two performances against an in form Chorley side.

Whilst everyone was desperately disappointed with the late call off last Saturday due to COVID in the Chorley camp it did give the players who were carrying a few bumps and bruises extra days to recover.

It’s been two very unkind draws so far but we all hope to be in the hat for 4Q on Monday when the Conference National sides join the competition.

Our record at Spennymoor isn’t the best and those with long memories still go cold remembering the first time we played what was then Spennymoor United as a Football League side.

It was however only back in 2020-21 that Southport came away with a 2-2 draw in the FA Trophy Round 3 that was followed up with a win on penalties in a game played behind closed doors.

As always we know we will have great support on the road and thank everyone who is making the trip.
