MATCH REPORT | Port Lift The Trophy

Southport lifted the Partners Foundation Lancashire Challenge Trophy with a comfortable 3-1 win over Colne helped by a hat-trick from in form Dion Charles.

A commanding first half performance from The Sandgrounders saw Charles score after 11 minutes after great build up play involving Brad Bauress and Reagan Ogle the latter providing a pin point cross to see the club’s leading scorer head home.

On 27 minutes a cross in by Devarn Green who was causing all sorts of problems down the right wing was finished by Charles.

Charles hat trick was complete on 34 minutes when after a defensive mix up Sampson pounced and unselfishly laid the ball across goal for Charles to finish.

It was the perfect hat-trick with a header, right foot and left foot finish.

Southport had plenty of chances to increase the lead in the first period with the outstanding Paddy Lacey and David Morgan dominating the midfield play and Charles came so close to adding his fourth goal of the night in added time of the first half  when he headed over after more superb play from Green.

The second half was more of the same with Southport creating a further seven openings without being able to finish them off.

To their credit Colne kept battling away and got the goal of the night in the 80th minute when a shot from all of 25 yards flew past Josh Tibbetts in the Southport goal. Colne’s spirit was lifted by the goal and they showed why they have qualified for the play offs in their division with some neat interplay without ever really threatening the Southport goal.

Morgan and Morgan Homson-Smith both went close to increasing Southport’s lead in the closing minutes with shots flying just wide.

The final whistle was blown and Southport collected their 8th Lancashire Junior Cup win.

Manager Liam Watson had targeted a good FA Cup run and two pieces of silverware this season after a poor start in the league left Southport adrift in the table and he was delighted after the game to be able to fulfil his targets.

The trophy was presented to captain David Morgan and the players and Southport supporters were once again able to enjoy the celebrations of another cup win.
