REPORT | Narrow Defeat

It was a disappointing day in County Durham as the Port fell to a 1-0 loss against a strong Spennymoor Town side.

Southport had the first big chance as Brad Bauress delivered a corner perfectly onto the head of Dean Winnard in the 10th minute who directed the ball towards goal. With the keeper looking helpless it was only a goal line clearance that kept the scores level.

It took until the 39thminute for another major chance in a fairly even first half.

Devarn Green skipped inside, beating the Spennymoor left back with ease before getting a shot away that was deflected behind for a corner.

Spennymoor had a chance to take the lead just before the stroke of half time as a quick free kick almost let Glen Taylor through on goal but Winnard and Ryan Astles recovered well to halt the striker in his tracks.

After an even first half, the second period seemed to be going the same way until the 65th minute.

A mix up at the back meant Port failed to clear their lines and Glen Taylor snuck in to steal the ball away before sliding it into the bottom corner out of the reach of Charlie Albinson.

The hosts almost doubled their lead nine minutes later as Chris Mason got a shot away from a corner but the ball was valiantly cleared off the line by Jack Doyle.

Southport had one last chance to level the score in the 84th minute as substitute Connor Woods swung in a great cross from the right wing onto the head of Zehn Mohammed but the defender’s header went into the hands of Matt Gould.

Southport will next be in action when we welcome Kings Lynn to the Pure Stadium next Saturday.
