Southport came from two goals down after just ten minutes to win 6-2 against Marine.

It was a shaky start for the Port with two defensive lapses gifting the home side two goals. Indeed, for the opening 25 minutes Southport struggled to get going.

Liam Watson’s side gradually came back in to the game and Trialist 1 got the first of his three goals after being neatly set up by Russ Benjamin on 25 minutes and from then on the confidence flowed through the team.

The free-flowing football evident in the last two games was on display to delight the travelling fans watching the team for the first time after restrictions were lifted allowing 200 fans in to the game.

Trialist 1 got his second goal on 29 minutes with a great finish after a fine solo run, lifting a neat finish into the top corner from an angle.

Southport could have gone in with a half time lead but David Morgan’s lob just went wide of the goal.

Three goals in the opening 12 minutes of the second half from Jack Sampson, after a fine cross from Marcus Carver, Trialist 2 with a smart finish from the edge of the area and Carver himself gave Southport a 5-2 lead with a goal of great quality after a fine flowing passing move.

The icing on the cake came with Trialist 1 completing his well deserved hat-trick on 63 minutes.

Southport had chances to extend the lead but it was Marine who came close late on with a shot that whistled just wide of the post.

Another useful work out for Watson and the squad and with three hat-tricks in the last three games and 21 goals in the last four friendlies the confidence is high.

The game was delayed for 24 hours as Storm Francis was in full flow last night, a decision that proved to be spot on and it was well worth the wait.

It will be a stiffer task on Saturday when Barrow, newly promoted into the Football League, are at The Pure Stadium for the latest pre-season game which will be played behind closed doors.
