PREVIEW | Pilgrims’ Journey

Following on from their midweek point on the road, Southport head into the weekend looking to extend the good run as they welcome Boston United to the Merseyrail Community Stadium.

Jack Sampson was on target once again on Tuesday night in the midweek draw against Spennymoor Town.

This weekend the striker will be looking to get on the scoresheet for the third game running, with Southport returning home after a few matches on their travels.

Opponents Boston United, sit in tenth place but only one point above the Port in the Vanarama National League North table.

The Pilgrams enter this game on the back of a midweek defeat at the hands of high-flying Stockport County, who climbed to the top of the table with their victory.

The last three games have been tough for Craig Elliot’s side, first losing heavily to Chester 4-1, before drawing against AFC Telford after conceding in the fifth minute of stoppage time last Saturday.

Form has been mixed for Boston since the turn of the year with four wins, three draws and four defeats. During those eleven games they have failed to register a clean sheet.

The last time the pair met, the current man in form, Sampson, was on the scoresheet with the opener in the 2-1 victory for Southport.

That game was heading for draw until Ryan Astles scored in the fifth minute of added time to give the visitors all three points.

Boston finished in ninth place last season, and look set for a similar finish again, with a big push needed to narrow that seven point gap between them and the final play-off place.

Meanwhile, Southport are looking to finish as high as possible and with a victory this weekend they can leap frog Boston and move closer to doing that.
