PREVIEW | Tasty Trophy Tie

PREVIEW | Tasty Trophy Tie

The Port added another win to their record, as the excellent form continued last week, but now they’ll be hoping for another on Saturday against Chester in the Buildbase FA Trophy third qualifying round.

Confidence is high within the squad, with an Emirates FA Cup second round tie coming up and last week’s victory over Boston propelling the side out of the bottom three.

Chester will provide another stern test in the trophy, as they currently sit in the play-off spots on 30 points.

Of course Kidderminster and Boston we’re both around those places so Liam Watson’s side will be up for another battle in front of the fans.

Chester are without a win in their last four games, two defeats and two draws, with their last positive result coming in a 3-2 victory over Nuneaton earlier this month.

The Blues have been involved in multiple high scoring games, getting some big wins including a 4-1 victory over Ashton United.

But they are also leaky at the back and have the worse defensive record of the top ten teams, conceding the same amount as the Port despite the difference in league position.

An early season blip where they lost 8-1 to Blyth Spartans has certainly contributed to that poor record.

Since then they haven’t lost by more than two goals but have still been shipping a good amount that could be a certain weakness.

Meanwhile two on loan strikers will be the men for the Southport defence to keep tight to.

Anthony Dudley, on loan from Salford, has scored seven, whilst Dan Mooney, on loan from Fleetwood, has scored eight.

Joint Managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley will hope the goals from the forward pair will help the side remain in the upper part of the table, as the club looks for promotion at the first time of asking after relegation last season.

They will also be hoping they can be important at the weekend as both teams enter the Trophy hoping for a run to Wembley, with Southport using the good performances in recent cup competitions to deliver five successive wins.

Online tickets close at 8pm on Friday 23 November.
