PREVIEW | Take Three!

Southport made good of their week off as they beat league leaders Chorley on Saturday; now they’ll be hoping to continue that from as they face Tranmere in the Liverpool Senior Cup.

This will be the third time this season the Sandgrounders have come up against Mickey Mellon’s side, with the previous two being in the FA Cup.

In the first meeting between the pair, a second half strike from Brad Bauress cancelled out Tranmere’s opener in the clash at Prenton Park.

That draw meant the two would clash again in a replay at the Merseyrail Community Stadium.

Despite a brave performance from Liam Watson’s men, Rovers proved too strong and progressed to the third round 2-0 winners.

At the time of that meeting on that cold December night, Tranmere were only out of the League 2 playoff places on goal difference; now they find themselves in tenth place and six points off the top seven.

In 2019, Tranmere have won two of their six league games, with the second of those coming last weekend against Stevenage.

James Norwood was on target to complete his sides 2-0 victory and grab his 20th goal of the season, making him League 2 top scorer.

That victory would’ve been pleasant viewing for Rovers after three defeats in the three previous league games before.

Meanwhile Southport was in a similar position entering the Chorley game at the weekend, having lost two games on the bounce, before that huge victory.

To get to this stage of the competition Southport overcame lower league Marine with a 2-0 win.

Gilchrist’s second half double was enough to set up this Tuesday’s tie as the sides battle for a place in the semi-final.

Both sides will no doubt play weakened sides, but none-the-less this is a great opportunity for Southport to get revenge and to get closer to possible silverware.
