PREVIEW | More Cup Fever

The Port enjoyed their break from league action at the weekend as they were triumphant in a 3-0 win in Yorkshire.

They will hope to continue the cup joy on Tuesday night when they take on Holker Old Boys in the opening round of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy.

Sandgrounders fans might be quietly confident whilst on their travels to Barrow, as the opponents ply their trade in the North West Counties First Division – four divisions below.

The Cobs have suffered a torrid start to the campaign, so goals may present themselves in the midweek game.

In their past three games they have lost 5-0 to Garstang, 11-2 to Longridge Town and 9-0 to St Helens.

Their goal difference currently stands at -36 after only nine games, and they have also mustered only one point.

This is a huge contrast from last season where they they finished a comfortable 9th, but this season looks much tougher for the side based at Rakesmoor Lane (LA14 4QB).

Liam Watson’s side may not have enjoyed the greatest of starts either but Holker’s start really puts things into perspective. There is no doubt that this fixture also gives Holker the chance to kick-start their season, hence why the club can assure fans who are making the trip that a strong squad is travelling.

Back-to-back cup wins could be the morale boost the side needs to progress in other competitions, whilst also treating the opponents and competition with as much respect as possible.
