PREVIEW | Midweek Clash

PREVIEW | Midweek Clash

Southport welcome York to the Pure Stadium this evening for a midweek clash.

Liam Watson’s side will be looking to return to winning ways after a 1-1 draw away to Telford at the weekend.

With 11 points in their opening six games, it has been a solid start for the sport.

Tonight’s opponents, York, have only won one of their opening three Vanarama National League North games this season, but are still unbeaten.

The Minstermen were very unfortunate not to earn promotion last season, missing out on top spot due points per game.

After having to settle with a playoff spot, they were then beaten by Altrincham in the semi-finals.

Their only league win of this campaign came on the opening day, as they beat Chorley 3-1 at Bootham Crescent.

The man in charge:

York manager, Steve Watson, enjoyed a successful first full season at the helm.

The former Newcastle and Everton right back started his managerial career with Gateshead in 2017, before joining the Minstermen in January 2019.

With the Yorkshire club sat in 15th place when he first took over, he transformed them into promotion hopefuls.

Key men:

York have recently recruited the attacking partnership of Jack Redshaw and Harry Bunn.

Despite neither having opened their league accounts yet, they will still need to be watched with Football League experience between the pair.

Meanwhile in midfield, former Chelsea youth product, Michael Woods, will provide a threat and look to build on his opening day goal.

Last meetings:

The first meeting between the two sides last season ended in a 1-1 draw in the Yorkshire capital, with David Morgan on the scoresheet for The Port.

Meanwhile, when they came head to head at The Pure Stadium it was the Minstermen who were victorious back January.

A Jordan Burrow double condemned the Sandgrounders to a 0-2 defeat.

Final Thoughts:

York have some excellent quality in their ranks, as proven by their form last season, but the Port’s strong start to the season means they should go into the match in a confident mood.
