PREVIEW | Midweek Battle

Southport will be looking to return to winning ways as they prepare to take on Altrincham on Tuesday night.

Liam Watson’s side ended their recent run of defeats with a 1-1 draw against Kettering Town on Saturday afternoon, but will hope to go one better as they welcome the Robins to the Pure Stadium.

Phil Parkinson’s side have endured a mixed opening month to the new campaign, and currently sit on nine points along side the Port in the Vanarama National League North.

Alty kicked off the season with a 3-1 defeat against York, before back to back 1-1 draws with Chester and Gloucester City.

They followed that up with a 3-2 victory over Alfreton Town, with John Johnston grabbing a late goal to claim the three points.

Alty’s second win of the campaign came in their most recent game at the weekend, as they beat Farsley Celtic 3-1.

James Jones and Jordan Hulme lead the way for the Robins in the scoring charts, with three goals each in the opening month.

Meanwhile the club’s top scorer from last season, Josh Hancock, who struck on 15 occasions, is yet to get off the mark but will still provide a threat to the Port defence.

Meanwhile Watson’s side will be given opportunities to score, with the Robins holding the second worse defensive record in the league, conceding on 15 occasions.

Their heaviest defeat came in their last away game against Boston United, where they were on the end of a 5-0 hammering.

In order to win, the Port must perform better than on the two meetings between the sides last season, where they lost 3-1 and 1-0.

Victory will be important for both sides in order to push upwards in the league.
