PREVIEW | Heed Hunters

PREVIEW | Heed Hunters

Southport will be looking for another victory as they head to the North East to face Gateshead this weekend.

After a midweek 0-2 win over Bradford Park Avenue, Liam Watson’s side will want to build on that and get another three points on the board.

Opposition:

Saturday’s opponents, Gateshead, came close to an instant return to the Vanarama National League, following their demotion in 2019, but fell just short.

Following a 7th placed finished, they reached the play-off semi-finals, only to lose 5-3 to Boston United.

So far this season, The Heed have won two, drawn one and lost three.

Scoring has been a problem for the North East side, with only five league goals to their name, which is the third lowest in the competition.

Last time out they were denied three points by Brackley, as Lee Ndlovu scored a 90th minute equaliser to make it 2-2.

The man in charge:

Player manager, Mike Williamson, is currently overseeing his second season in charge of Gateshead.

During his career he played for teams including Wycombe, Watford and Wolves.

One of his longest stints was at St James’ Park, as he spent six years with Newcastle, leaving in 2016.

The 38-year-old returned to the North East in 2018, as he signed for Gateshead, before taking over the managerial duties a year later.

Key men:

No player has stood out with goals for Gateshead so far this season, with no one getting more than one.

After scoring last time out, Macaulay Longstaff will be looking to add more from midfield.

Meanwhile the ex-Newcastle contingent at the International Stadium continues, with goalkeeper Rob Elliot currently part of the Heed squad.

Last meetings:

There wasn’t much to report when these two last met, as it was far from memorable.

Neither side could find a goal, as they opened last season with a 0-0 draw.

Final Thoughts:

With Gateshead’s record in front of goal this season, it could be another low scoring game between the two sides.

After a midweek win to get them back on track, Southport will be hoping to edge this one.
