PREVIEW | Ashton Away

With Christmas not far away, Southport will be hoping for an early present as they look for three points against Ashton United today (3pm KO).

It’s been a mixed week for Liam Watson’s side with two cup exits, but a 3-1 victory over Garstang to put the Port back on to winning ways.

Even in the defeats; positives can still be taken with a huge turnout and great atmosphere in the Emirates FA Cup tie against Tranmere as the players gave their all.

Now those positives must be taken into the league once again, as they return to National League North action.

This weekends game at Ashton United is the third meeting of the season between the pair.

The first was an entertaining clash at the Merseyrail Community Stadium, as the Sandgrounders came from two behind to earn a 2-2 draw.

Astles and Gilchrist were on target to get something out of the game after going two behind in the first 14 minutes.

Southport went one better when the sides met again, this time in the fourth round of qualifying in the FA Cup.

Once again it was a far from easy game as Watson’s men went down to ten after David Lynch’s sending off, but Southport battled again with Green scoring the winner with eight minutes remaining to secure a 2-1 win.

Despite playing two games more than Southport, Ashton find themselves one point worse off as they sit in the relegation zone on 17 points.

The Robins also currently have the worst goal difference in the entire league with -29, conceding 51 goals.

Clearly adapting to a higher division, after last years promotion, is proving difficult for manager Jody Banim’s side.

Victory on Saturday could be massive for Southport and widen the gap between them and their relegation rivals.

The side have put in so much good work across the last two months, following an awful start to the season, now it’s time to keep the momentum going across the festive period.
