PREVIEW | A Key Battle Awaits

Following on from last Saturday’s draw against Spennymoor, Liam Watson’s side prepare to take on FC United of Manchester for an important fixture.

The Manchester based side have only managed to acquire four points so far this season, winning once, drawing once and losing the remaining seven of the opening eight games.

New Main Man

FC United’s poor run of form led to the resignation of player/manager Tom Greaves, who had been in the job for less than a year after taking over from the clubs only other previous coach Karl Marginson.

The club record goal scorer stepped away from the role in order to prolong his own playing career as well as to give him more time to spend with his family.

Taking over the role in the short term is former club captain Dave Chadwick, who will be eager to turn things around.

League Life

In Chadwick’s first game in charge, the team demonstrated good character as they came from two behind to claim a point.

Litchfield gave the team hope, pulling one back in the 62nd minute, before a stoppage time penalty from Willoughby meant the points were shared.

The Red Rebels start to the season set the tone for what has followed, with a heavy 5-1 defeat to Stockport County.

Even the consolation came through an own goal from County’s Ashley Palmer, leaving the opening game with positives hard to find.

Defensive problems were clear again in the first home game of the season against Ashton United.

Greaves’ side squandered a 3-1 half time lead to lose the game 4-3, with an 85th minute McHale goal securing all three points for Ashton.

Yet another big defeat followed, as Boston United was the next visitors to Broadhurst Park.

Two goals from Abbott helped the Pilgrims on their way to a 3-0 win as FC United’s disastrous start continued.

The only positive result this season came in the fourth game against Altrincham.

Goals from Dickinson and Willoughby helped the Reds come from behind for their first win of the season.

That was to be it, as back to back 2-0 defeats to Leamington and Spennymoor followed before Monday’s draw against Bradford.

Past Battles

When Southport came up against FCUM last season, Sandgrounders fans were subject to a draw and defeat.

The first meeting between the pair at the Merseyrail Community Stadium saw a superb 3-3 draw.

The Reds were 3-1 up in the game heading into the final three minutes, before late goals from Dugdale and Sampson ensured Southport’s unbeaten run continued.

The reverse fixture was far less dramatic, with a single goal deciding the game.

A 12th minute strike from player/manager Tom Greaves gave the victory to Red Rebels over Kevin Davies side.

Whilst both sides were able to get a point in their last games, FC United will undoubtedly go into this more upbeat after their comeback.

A victory is very important for both these sides who need to boost their results soon, otherwise the next time they meet it could be in more dramatic circumstances.
