MATCH REPORT | Southport 6-0 Clitheroe – Lancs Challenge Trophy

Southport progressed into the Lancashire Partners Challenge Trophy quarter-final with a comprehensive win over Clitheroe.

For the second time in as many games, the Sandgrounders found themselves four goals to the good at half-time, this win building on the excellent victory at Kidderminster Harriers at the weekend.

Jack Sampson scored twice before the break as Southport made their intentions clear from the outset against the team sat 14th in the Evo-Stik First Division West.

Sampson put the Sandgrounders on their way after 18 minutes, slotting home the rebound after his initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Cameron Terry.

Antonie Recizac sent a shot against the Southport post, but the home team underlined their dominance with three goals in six minutes.

Billy Priestley climbed highest inside the area to head home a cross from Jordan Richards, while Sampson scored again after excellent work on the right from Devarn Green in beating his man and delivering a good cross.

And Richards added a fourth on 32 minutes, finding the target with a strike from 25 yards.

Having also seen Morgan Homson-Smith, making his first start in a Southport shirt, do well to work his way into space before being denied by goalkeeper Terry, the Sandgrounders set about the second half with the same level of intent.

A free-kick from Richards was put into his own goal by defender Josh Snowden, before Homson-Smith made his way onto the scoresheet, making no mistake with the follow-up after Terry had saved a shot from Jason Gilchrist.

Southport goalkeeper Josh Tibbetts, also starting a competitive fixture for the first time, made an excellent save to keep out a low drive from Jonah Gosling.

Dion Charles lifted an effort against the Clitheroe crossbar and Max Hazeldine also struck the woodwork at the opposite end as Southport sealed their place in the next round in style.
