MATCH REPORT | Southport 3-0 Chester

David Morgan scored twice as Southport claimed maximum points on Boxing Day against Chester.

Morgan was on target once in each half and Brad Buress netted just before the interval as the Port continued their climb up the Vanarama National League North table with a comprehensive win.

There was an intensity about Southport’s play from the start and by the time Morgan put them in front six minutes before the break, they should have already been comfortably ahead, such as their dominance.

Bauress did well to engineer space for a cross before delivering a piercing ball into the centre of the Chester area. It fell kindly for Jason Gilchrist but he could only direct his diving header from a central position over the crossbar.

Ryan Astles twice went close from corners, as did Bauress, before the Port’s pressure paid dividends. Gilchrist turned cleverny before releasing Charles, allowing the oncoming Morgan seize possession before sweeping a fine finish into the bottom left-hand corner.

And by the interval, the home team were two goals to the good, Bauress rifling home a first-time effort from inside the area and Southport had the lead their purposeful play warranted.

The Port also set about the second half well but they had to withstand a period of pressure as the visitors searched for a route back.

Chester created one notable chance, Craig Mahon breaking free inside the area before how powerful drive drew a reflex save from goalkeeper Dan Hanford, who touched the ball over a time when the visitors had their tails up.

Dean Winnard made an important interception to divert Brad Jackson’s drive away from goal but Southport remained in control.

Another drive from Morgan dipped over the crossbar, before substitute Jack Sampson went close and an angled shot from Dion Charles whistled past the post.

Morgan did add the sheen in the final minute with another excellent low shot, providing added festive cheer for the home crowd.
