MATCH PREVIEW | Southport v Sutton United

Following on from last week’s Emirates FA Cup heroics against Chester, Southport will hope to register two wins in a row for the first time this season when they welcome Sutton United to the Merseyrail Community Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors sit comfortably in mid-table, whilst a win for Southport is a must if they are to move off the bottom of the Vanarama National League at the first time of asking, having been condemned to the spot in their last league outing against Guiseley.

Sutton epitomise the saying that football matches are not won on paper. So far this season they have beaten four of the current top five, with impressive league victories against Lincoln, Dagenham & Redbridge and Macclesfield in addition to beating National League leaders Forest Green in the cup last week. In contrast, they also contrived to lose at home to strugglers Braintree to give the Iron one of their two league victories this season.

A Southport win would be the perfect boost going into Tuesday’s clash with York City. Indeed if the Sandgrounders win these two games, both on home turf, they may find themselves out of the relegation zone as early as 10 o’clock on Tuesday night.

Whilst this is very much a best case scenario neither game can be classed as unwinnable, therefore there is reason to be optimistic for even the most despondent of Port fans.
