MATCH REPORT | Holker Old Boys 2-5 Southport – Lancs Challenge Trophy

Five first-half goals put Southport through in the Lancashire FA Partners Foundation Challenge Trophy with a win over Holker Old Boys.

Andy Hollins, marking his first competitive start in a Port shirt, and Mike Phenix both scored twice, while Jason Gilchrist also found the target as the Sandgrounders booked their place in the second round.

Hollins heads home his second

Southport fielded a strong side, giving game-time to some players who have not featured regularly in recent weeks, and the line-up also included Bouwe Bosma, last week’s loan signing from Coventry City, making his debut by completing the 90 minutes in the centre of midfield.

Hollins put Southport on their way in 11 minutes, rifling in a powerful volley as an attempted clearance from a Jordan Richards fell to him inside the area.

That set the tone for a flurry of early goals, the home team equalising quickly as Brandon Collins sent in a low cross from the right which was swept home by a good first-time finish from Nathan McHugh.

Yet within two minutes Hollins had restored the visitors’ lead with another emphatic finish, this time climbing highest inside the area to meet a corner from Brad Bauress with a towering header.

And the Sandgrounders wasted little time in adding a third, turning defence into attack in an instant as Devarn Green broke down the right to release Gilchrist, whose pass into the centre of the area gave Phenix the task of completing a close-range finish.

Phenix adds the fifth goal

Gilchrist himself got onto the scoresheet with an excellent shot into the bottom left-hand corner after a smart turn took him away from defender Kevin Watkin, and the striker was involved again the visitors’ fifth, teeing up Phenix to score from inside the area.

Southport could have scored more in the first half but conceded 11 minutes after the break, Gwynne Morgan breaking through the visiting defence before sending a low shot past goalkeeper Dan Hanford.

With a comfortable lead, the Sandgrounders were able to see out the rest of the game, Bosma going close with a header while Phenix crashed a shot against the post.

The draw for the second round of the competition takes place on Friday.
