INTERVIEW | Squad Goals

Jack Sampson says his Southport team-mates are eager to kick on after two goalless draws in their opening two games of the season.

The forward is hoping to use a solid start to the season as a springboard, improving on the stalemates against Gateshead and Curzon Ashton.

The 26-year-old states that the team will step up their attacking preparations ahead of facing their next opponents Guiseley.

“At the back we have been solid which has helped us get two points on the board, but as a striker it is frustrating not to have scored so that needs to be put right,” he said.

“We always work on our offensive play and scoring goals and I think we will be doing a bit more of that in the lead up to the next game.”

“As soon as we break the back of the net I’m sure we will be alright, but the sooner it comes the better.”

Sampson was full of praise for the fans who have supported the team so far this season, with 88 travelling to Gateshead and an attendance of 1,120 at the Pure Stadium for the opening home game.

“They’re brilliant every game,” he states. “Whether we win, lose or draw they always back us and hopefully we can repay them with a lot more points and goals.

The striker also enjoyed getting the opportunity to play on the grounds new pitch for the first time, following a summer of work to get it ready.

“It has been lovely to play on, so there’s no excuses that we can’t do better on it.”

Ahead of Saturday’s game against The Lions, who visit the Port on the back of a 5-0 win, Sampson expects more of the same.

“It’s going to be similar to Curzon as they had also won 5-0 before playing us. I know it’s early doors but they will have their backs up, which is better for us as we can turn them over and step them back.”
