INTERVIEW | Settling Down

Dylan Vassallo hopes he can kick on after getting his first goal for Southport last weekend.

The midfielder scored the decisive goal in the 1-0 victory over Chorley at The Pure Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Vassallo hopes his successfully converted first half free-kick will lay down the foundations for him to score more this season.

He said: “I’m made up, it is always hard to get your first one, so now it’s done I can hopefully settle down now and get more.”

The 22-year-old got the green light to take the free-kick from the manager on the side-lines, despite only scoring a small number whilst with Warrington Town.

“I thought Morgs (David Morgan) would take it, but Liam (Watson) shouted on for me to step up. It took a nice little deflection, you take them all, however they come. I took a few (with Warrington) but they were more from crossing areas, I only scored one, which was a few years back.”

Vassallo was pleased to get his first goal for the club.

The midfielder admits the Port had to work hard in the second half to secure the three-points, with Chorley having a handful to chances.

“The second half was tough, they put quite a bit of pressure on us and could’ve had a few, but Dan (Hanford) did what he is there to do.”

Vassallo has enjoyed his time at Haig Avenue so far and is confident in what the team can achieve.

“I’ve loved it, all the lads are proper welcoming, it’s a good group and I reckon we will do well. I think the standard in training has helped me step up. We want to get as many wins as we can and hopefully finish as high, we can.”
