Russell Benjamin was delighted after a ‘great’ 3-0 victory for Southport against Bradford (Park Avenue) on Saturday afternoon.

In the hours leading up to the game, it was uncertain whether it would go ahead, but the Port remained focused and did the job in West Yorkshire.

“It was a great win today, especially because the weather was a bit bad,” Benjamin said.

“I’m happy with the way it went because it puts us up there in the table and other teams are now thinking about us.”

The midfielder was full of praise in the way Liam Watson’s side went about their business against Bradford.

“Even on the coach, Macca (Jon McCarthy) kept us going to make sure our mind was on the match. You always have to stay focused and keep you game head on.”

“We need to keep this run going and we are a team who are capable of doing that. The way we have been playing we deserve it, so we just need to keep it going.”

Benjamin had praise for his team-mates, who have been in good goal scoring form.

“Devarn (Green) is always about there in those positions, whilst Morgs (David Morgan) keeps getting these wonder goals. The minute he hit that shot today I knew it was in.”

On his own personal form, the 27-year-old is pleased with his performances but wants to go up another level.

“I’m playing well to be fair but I think there’s a lot more to come from me so we’ll have to wait and keep on going.”
