INTERVIEW | Midfield Strength

Russell Benjamin has praised midfield partner Marcus Wood after the former Bolton Wanderers player returned from injury in Saturday’s Buildbase FA Trophy win over Colne.

Wood picked up a knock in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy game against Ashton Athletic at the start of the month and was sorely missed in the following matches against Spennymoor Town and King’s Lynn Town.

However, the midfielder made his return on the weekend, playing 60 minutes before being replaced by the scorer of Port’s second Brad Bauress as we came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and his midfield partner Benjamin was pleased to see Wood back.

“Marcus us very important to how we play,” Benjamin said. “He just gives you that extra hand defensively than when you’re in there by yourself and you always feel better knowing you have that steady pair of hands alongside you.

“He gets around himself, breaks play down, a bit like me so having Marcus in there is a massive boost to our chances in any game.”

Southport looked dangerous from the wide areas in their last game game with winger Devarn Green getting a goal and two assists and Benjamin says that success is down to manager Liam Watson.

“We know we’ve got talented players in those positions like Devarn or we’ve got Connor who’s a young lad and is always looking to get at his full backs,” he added.

“Liam just told us to put the ball down the line and let them do what they do best. That really works with the pitch we were playing as well.

“The pitch wasn’t really the best but when you’re in conditions like this you just need to be getting the ball on the wings, getting crosses into the box to the big lads and you’ll eventually score and we’ve done that.”
