Manager-Jim Bentley
Jim was appointed in August 2023. He brings a vast amount of managerial experience with him having had spells in charge at Morecambe, AFC Fylde and Rochdale. Jim is a larger than life character with a big personailty and with a full pre-season to bring in his own players and after steering the club up to 17th place after an up and down season in 2023-24 Jim is relishing the chance to work with his own players and move the club forward in 2024-25.At one point whilst at Morecambe Jim was the longest serving manager in the EFL.
Assistant Manager-Andy Burgess
Andy, who is also a member of The Big Help Project Team also has managerial experience at AFC Rushden & Diamonds where as a player for the now defunct Rushden and Diamonds he made over 250 appearances and is an R&D “Legend”
He previously managed Barnton and prior to that he was heavily involved in Women’s Football, managing Sheffield Wednesday, Preston and the Leeds United Women’s Teams.
Following the move of Liam Watson into a full time Director role Andy took on a Caretaker Manager role in partnership with David Morgan and reverted back to Assistant Manager when Jim Bentley was appointed. Proudly tells us that he scored twice for Rushden & Diamonds against Southport in the 2000-01 season but we don’t hold that against him!
Coach-Alan Morgan
Former Tranmere Rovers and Wales u21 star Alan Morgan has today been appointed to the first team coaching staff at Southport Football Club, joining Manager Jim Bentley and Assistant Manager Andy Burgess’ backroom staff. Alan Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the club, as a player Alan reached the 2000 League Cup Final with Tranmere Rovers during a 10-year spell at the Superwhites before embarking on a successful managerial career with Llandudno FC and Colwyn Bay.
1. Chris Renshaw (860) Goalkeeper
Chris made the move from Curzon Ashton in the summer of 2023 having picked up the Curzon Players’ Player Of The Year and Supporters’ Player Of The Year for the 2022-23 season.
Chris signed for Curzon at the start of the 21/22 season and kept 13 clean sheets before bettering that last season with 15.
Previously he signed for Everton on a three year deal in June 2016, joining the youth development ranks and was at Oldham Athletic prior to that.
In his first season at Southport Chris made 42 league appearances keeping 12 clean sheets and was destined to be an ever present before picking up a leg injury that ruled him out for 4 games at the back end of the season.
2. Matt Thomson (861) Defender
Matt was the club’s first signing of the 2023-24 close season a defender who joined the club from Bamber Bridge.
Matt initially joined Bamber Bridge on a loan basis from Chester in 2019 and signed for them permanently in the summer of 2020. Made 27 starts for the club in 2023-24 and the club exercised an option to extend his contract for 2024-25.
3. Jack Doyle (825) Defender
Signed from Blackburn Rovers just ahead of the 2019-20 season.
Jack made his debut for Rovers in 2017-18 before joining Maidstone United on loan but unfortunately his loan spell was cut short by injury.
At the start of the 2024-25 season Jack had made 162 starts in all competitions and has been a model of consistency in defence.
Swept the board at the end of season awards winning, Supporters Player Of The Year, Players Player Of The Year and also won the Goal Of The Season award for a tremendous free kick at King’s Lynn.
5. Harry Flowers (862) Defender
Manager Liam Watson made Harry a key summer signing target for 2023-24 and got his man in the middle of June. A tall central defender signed from AFC Telford United and lots of experience at this level having previously been at Curzon Ashton and Brackley Town. Great pedigree with his grandfather being the late Ron Flowers who played over 700 games for Wolves and 49 times for England. Unfortunately Harry suffered a serious injury in a pre-season game at Cliftonville and will be out of action for a lengthy spell
6. Nathaniel Knight-Percival (878) Defender
First close season signing for manager Jim Bentley, Nat brings a wealth of experience to the club. Spent the last part of the 2023-24 season on loan at Tamworth helping them to secure the National League North title. The previous season saw Nat gain promotion with Kidderminster. He started out with Histon in the Southern Premier some 20 years ago and progressed to play EFL football with Bradford City, Carlisle, Morecambe and Tranmere amongst others. Over 600 appearances to his name.
7. Danny Lloyd (605) Forward
Danny Lloyd rejoined the club at the end of 2023-24 after an absence of 12 years.
Danny, a forward was involved in the club’s PASE set up back in 2008 and made 1 sub league appearance in the 2009-10 season as well as having 2 cup starts and he also had 4 sub starts in 2010-11.
Danny went on to play for Colwyn Bay, Lincoln City, Tamworth, AFC Fylde, Stockport, Peterborough United. Salford City, Tranmere, Gillingham, Rochdale and Livingston.
8. David Morgan (795) Midfield
David returned to the club after being released by Accrington Stanley at the end of the 2022-23 season. His time at Accrington was interrupted by injury but he returned to Southport and made 38 starts in the 2023-24 season. Morgs is our Academy Manager. A real fans favourite, lots of experience and a player who never gives less than 100%. Morgs originally signed in September 2017, left the club for Accrington after making 105 league starts scoring 19 goals he also made 23 starts in the cups and added a further 3 goals to his tally. Following the move of Liam Watson into a full time Director role Morgs took on a joint caretaker manager role with Andy Burgess and then reverted back to player coach upon the appointment of Jim Bentley. By the end of the 2023-24 season Morgs had made 139 league starts for the club with his appearances totalling 178 in all competitions with 22 goals to his credit.
9. Jamie Proctor (882) Striker
Jamie began his footballing career at Preston North End, where he spent 6 years in the youth setup, then turning professional in 2010. He featured 37 times for PNE, until he completed a permanent transfer to Swansea City. He would go on to make over 60 appearances for both Crawley Town and Fleetwood Town, before making a loan move permanent with Bradford City in 2016.
Since then, he has gone on to feature for the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Carlisle United, Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic, Port Vale & Barrow AFC.
Jamie has won promotion in the EFL four times, with Bolton Wanderers (League 1 – 2016/17), Rotherham United (League 1 – 2017/18 & 2019/20) and most recently, Port Vale (League One Playoff Winners – 2022).
10. Marcus Carver (835) Striker
It was the fourth time he had signed for the club when he put pen to paper on a one year contract in the summer much to the delight of all Southport fans. Popular on and off the field with the supporters, he has made Southport his home and is looking to add to his tally of 35 goals in all competitions for the club. Originally left the club to sign for Hartlepool before moving on to Scunthorpe and returned to Haig Avenue on a season long loan last season adding another 12 goals to his tally.
11. Dior Angus (886) Forward
Signed from AFC Telford mid October to boost the forward ranks Dior brings a wealth of experience to the Southport squad.
Dior began his career in non-league with Solihull Moors and spent his early years at a number fo Midlands clubs. Dior’s most successful spell in terms of goal production came at Redditch United, which earned him a move to EFL side Port Vale,
Although he did play and score in the EFL for the Valiants, he spent much of his time on loan, first at Tamworth and then with Nuneaton Borough, a club his father Terry had also represented.
A further loan spell at Barrow became a permanent move in 2019, and in his first full season, his strike partnership with Scott Quigley fired the Bluebirds to the National League summit.
Dior left Barrow at the end of the January 2021 transfer deadline and signed for Wrexham.
Another transfer window move came in September 2022, with Dior joining EFL side Harrogate Town. Injuries limited his game time, and at the conclusion of the 2022/23 season he joined Altrincham.
Following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, Dior signed for Telford.
13. Tony McMillan (582) Goalkeeper
A former youth and reserve team player at Preston North End, he joined the Linnets from Lancaster City in June 2006 after becoming a familiar name in the Conference North. Having moved from Preston to Wigan Athletic, he played under Liam Watson at Runcorn FC Halton, where he kept goal in over 200 matches after joining in 2001. Upon signing for the Sandgrounders he was handed the gloves ahead of Steven Drench and went on to play 240 games over a 5 year spell which included lifting the Conference North title.
Since leaving Haig Avenue in 2013 he had a short spell with Altrincham before joining Barrow with whom he spent a further 3.5 years.
You can never keep a good ‘keeper down. Tony returned to Haig Avenue at the start of the 2019-20 season after leaving in 2013 with 205 league appearances under his belt for The Sandgrounders. A stellar career and at 42 can still be relied upon when called into the team as he was on 6 occasions in 2023-24 which brought his overall appearance record up to 302 and fourth place in the overall NL appearance list for the club.
14. Keenan Quansah (853) Defender
Keenan signed for Southport at the start of the 2022-23 season from Stalybridge Celtic and can play as a centre-back, right-back or central midfielder, he came through Accrington Stanley’s youth academy and has had spells at Glossop North End, Burscough, Warrington, Mossley, Hyde and Widnes.
Keenan was the Stalybridge Celtic fans player for the season for 2021-22 where he had a full season making 48 appearances and scoring twice.
The 22-23 season saw Keenan effortlessly make the step up and 45 appearances which were cut short at the tail end of the season by injury.His more famous brother grabs all the attention but Keenan loves playing for Southport and never gives less than 100% in any game.
15. Tom Moore (879) Defender
A Central Defender signed in the close season from Bury where he was the club captain and voted players player of the year in 2023-24.
16. Jordan Keane (880) Defender
Club Captain. Jordan arrives at Southport with a wealth of experience, having made 185 appearances in the National League and 145 appearances in the National League North. His most successful spell was at Stockport County, where he featured 148 times, playing his part in their National League & National League North title victories during the 18/19 & 21/22 seasons, and is regarded as a County legend today.
Prior to arriving at Edgeley Park, Jordan started off at Derby County, before appearing for Stoke City, Lincoln City and Boston United
17. Fin Heath (859)
Fin joined the club permanently for 2023-24 after a couple of appearances in 2022-23 season on loan from AFC Liverpool. Full of potential and a player rated very highly by manager Jim Bentley. Can play in defence or midfield. Appearances were limited in 2023-24 but has re-signed for 2024-25 and everyone at the club will be hoping Fin can kick on and hold down a regular place this coming season.
18. Sonny Hilton (884) Midfield
An exciting prospect whose pedigree is clear, having come through the ranks at Fulham and enjoying a successful Premier League 2 career, captaining his side while making 63 appearances and notching 31 goal involvements. The 23-year-old has also made his mark on the international stage, with appearances for England U16, U17, and U19.
20. Luke Burgess (869) Midfield
Luke became manager Jim Bentley’s first permanent signing in mid October 23. The midfielder who has previous experience with Wigan and Salford spent the 2022-23 season at Oldham before a loan spell at Altrincham and more recently he has been with Ashton United. Likes to get amongst the goals and is a player who will excite the Southport fans. We never saw the best from Luke in 2023-24 after injuries and suspensions interrupted his season. He is very highly rated by the management team and has been given a 6 month contract to January 2025.
21. Renato De Oliveira-Gomes (887) Forward
Academy Graduate included in the squad and with great potential. First team debut against South Shields in added time. Out on loan with
22. Sam Minihan (881) Defender
Signed from Buxton is the summer. A right back with plenty of experience having made close on 200 appearances for Stockport County before joining FC Halifax in the 2022-23 season and then Sam was with Buxton last season where he picked up the Supporters Player Of The Year award. A whole-hearted and fully committed player with a never say die attitude.
23. Jack Stafford (885) Defender
Signed for the club after impressing in the pre season warm up games and was Jim Bentley’s 11th signing of the close season.
Jack was a trainee/scholar at Exeter City between 2018 and 2020. He had previously been part of the academy at Burnley.
After leaving Exeter, Jack joined League of Ireland Waterford in February 2021 and played 28 games for the club during the 2021/22 season. He signed an 18-month contract to be a member of Swansea City’s under-23 squad in February 2022.
Jack suffered a serious injury in 2022/23 and, having eventually regained full fitness, left South Wales to move to Stafford Rangers in February 2024.
24. Will Russ(874) Striker
Will, who is 6 feet 2 signed a two and a half year deal at the club in January 2024 from Fleetwood Town and is a very exciting player and a player we are all looking forward to seeing more of in the Southport shirt in 2024-25
Will is a big strong powerful centre forward who started out in The Academy at Leicester City before joining Fleetwood at the age of 19. Whilst at Fleetwood he had loan spells at FC United, South Shields, Marine and more recently with Hyde.
25. Danny Philliskirk (872) Midfield
Danny started off his footballing career at Oldham Athletic, progressing through the youth system at Boundary Park. His performances then earned him a move to the capital, penning a long-term deal with Chelsea in 2007. He captained the youth team in the 2008/09 season, before going on to establish his position in the club’s reserve side.
Following this, Danny featured for Oxford United, Sheffield United & Coventry City, before returning to Oldham Athletic in 2013. He remained at Boundary Park for two-and-a-half years, where he made over 100 appearances during his second spell with Latics.
In the January transfer window of 2016, Danny joined League One side Blackpool, where he stayed for the rest of that season, and the next.
His next move saw him arrive at Mill Farm, where he spent 6 seasons with AFC Fylde, winning both the FA Trophy in 2019 and promotion from the Vanarama National League North in the 2022-23 season.
Danny spent the second-half of last season with the club, featuring in every league game during his loan spell. Bringing with him plenty of experience.
Son of manager Jim, A pacey defender with good potential included in the squad and has played in two County Cup games for the first team.
28. Connor Evans
Connor has signed on a short-term contract, following the completion of his season over at Waterford FC in Ireland.
Connor, from North Wales, progressed through the ranks at League Two side Crewe Alexandra and made his debut in an EFL Trophy knockout game against Rotherham United.
He has had a great upbringing at both Liverpool as a youngster and then at Crewe, where he broke into their first team. He has sampled football at non-league level with a couple of loans and gives us something different at the top of the pitch.
