MATCH REPORT | Braintree Town 2 – 0 Southport

Two excellent Braintree Town finishes from Sam Corne and a lack of composure from the Port players sentenced Southport to another defeat.

Euan Murray, marauding forward, saw his 10th minute overhead kick from a long left-wing thrown-in came off the base of the far post and back into play.

Southport dominated the first half but they failed to seriously extend Braintree goalkeeper Ben McNamara.

Just before half-time the Sam Corne latched onto a deep right-wing corner and slotted home with a snap shot finish.

Southport midfielder Jim Stevenson wasted a great 57th-minute opportunity, shooting straight at McNarama from just 12 yards.

Within seconds, Corne produced a superb low 25-yard finish, beating goalkeeper Craig King to his left.

That second killed off the Sandgrounders, whose closest chance to score in the second half was through a Stevenson glancing header that a mid-air McNamara clutched comfortably.
