Another Pre Season Win For Southport
Report By Alan Jones
|A second-half goal from Ashley Grimes was the difference as Southport registered their second win of pre-season at Marine.
Grimes, a summer signing from Barrow, scored three minutes after half-time, turning home a shot from inside the Marine area when under pressure from goalkeeper Calvin Hare after a ball from Jonathan Royle had been knocked down by Connor McCarthy.
The Sandgrounders’ margin of victory should have been greater, as they created a series of chances as the match progressed but neglected to take them.
Marine, from the Evo-Stik Premier Division, began the game well, and Alex Davies sent a fizzing shot across the face of the Southport goal after Danny Mitchley, the one-time Port striker, had a free-kick blocked by the visiting wall.
But as the first half wore on, the Sandgrounders began to control the play and they moved the ball around neatly.
It was from a tidy passing move that Gary Jones’ low long-range drive was caught by goalkeeper Matty Cooper, while Louis Almond bent a smart 25-yard effort around the post.
If there was one criticism it was that chances were difficult to come by, but that changed shortly after the interval, Grimes scoring the deciding goal.
James Gray ought to have extended Southport’s lead when one-on-one with Hare, the substitute goalkeeper, but he scuffed his finish after an excellent turn as weighted pass from Connor McCarthy.
McCarthy himself was unable to exploit good approach work from Jamie Allen, before Gray was denied by Hare having been released by Royle.
A corner from Jones was headed against a post by Chris Doyle as Southport introduced a number of changes during the second half, while keeper Hare blocked Royle’s goal-bound effort on the line after Jones and McCarthy had combined from a short corner.
Southport visit Ashton United on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm, before they host Bury, from Sky Bet League One, at the Merseyrail Community Stadium next Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
