Head of Professional Development Appointed

Southport Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of UEFA ‘B’ licensed coach Cameron Foster into a new role of Head of Professional Development for the coming season.

In this new voluntary role Cameron will oversee the development of all players and coaches within the U17-U21 Professional Development Phase of the club, and will support the Charter Standard Community football programme which includes activities for boys and girls aged from 4-16.

Cameron has been inspiring young people to get involved in sport since he was seriously injured in a 40 foot fall from a ski lift when he was just nine-years-old.

He was on a school trip to the Alps when he fell onto compacted ice, breaking his left arm, dislocating both ankles and shattering his legs. Despite his horrific injuries he was walking again within eight weeks and soon after he was back on his feet he was organising fundraising events to help others less fortunate than himself. His fundraising efforts have led to him being awarded the British Red Cross Humanitarian Citizen of the year award, The Diana Award and the Rotary International Young Citizen of the year.

An ambassador for Coca-Cola in the run up to the Olympic Games in 2012, Cameron was also one of the first to be named as a torch bearer for the nationwide relay of the Olympic flame. He is the co-founder of the charity “They are Africa” which provides funding and equipment for poverty stricken youngsters in Africa to go to university.

With over 7 years of experience from grassroots football to working with Manchester United he has a range of knowledge that will benefit the club. Most recently Cameron has been coaching in the FA Womens Premier League guiding Chorley Ladies FC to 5th place in the league. Cameron is already familiar with Southport Football Club through his Full Time role as Football Development Officer at Cheshire FA. He brings with him a wealth of experience working with clubs and leagues across the region to put structures in place that support their growth and sustainability and we are delighted to welcome him to the club.

On appointment Cameron stated “I am delighted to work with a club that has clear values, it is an exciting opportunity to develop something special with the youth set-up here at Southport FC. There will be many challenges along the way but with the right time, dedication and investment we can increase the number of youth players progressing to first team football. I thank the club for the opportunity and I can’t wait to get started on the pitch in pre-season. Here’s to a successful future!”

James Treadwell, Director, stated “This is an excellent appointment as part of the progression of our youth setup and I know that a lot of time and effort has been put in to get to this stage. I wish Cameron all the best in this new role and look forward to him working with our new first team manager in due course.”
